I know those feelings well, because I've been there.

At 38, I was standing in a Nordstrom dressing room, trying on jean shorts three sizes bigger than I used to wear. I couldn't get anything to fit. I sat on that bench and wanted to cry. As I looked at my reflection under those terrible fluorescent lights, I didn't recognize myself anymore, and I felt so disappointed and discouraged.

Here's what I learned:

After 35, we start losing muscle mass faster than ever, which completely shifts our metabolism. The amount I was eating, which felt normal to me, was now too much for my body. I had no idea!

So, I started tracking what I ate for one week. When I learned how much food my body actually needed and started eating accordingly—not through restriction, but through understanding—I lost 20 pounds. My clothes fit great. I had more energy. And I felt so much more confident.

But more importantly, I've kept it off for over 8 years.

Today:

At 44, I eat French fries and drink wine without worrying that I’m going to "blow back up” or set myself back, because I understand my metabolism. It’s an amazing feeling.
